I am greatly honored to have been named the director of the Miho Museum. This appointment came about partly due to enthusiastic entreaties over the past several years from Mrs. and Ms. Koyama and partly due to the fabulous contents of the Miho Museum. This new museum building has been designed by I. M. Pei, the internationally renowned architect based in the United States. Dr. Pei is noted for his buildings for the famous museums of the world, including the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the New Wing of the Louvre, and I believe that the Miho Museum structure, providing a modern expression of the Asian spirit of coexistence with nature, will stand out among these museums structures. The contents of the Miho Museum are extraordinary. From the ancient Egyptian statue “Cult Figure of a Falcon-headed Deity’’ through the rest of the collection’s splendors, this array of works is truly stupendous. 1 am not an art history specialist, but when I saw the fine caliber of these works I took on the job of director with the full belief that they will only further enhance my old age. It is my sincere hope that the greatest possible number of people will come to know and love this museum, and that the museum will further serve to heighten the artistic sentiments of the people of the world.
